Shiori visits her in-laws' home with her husband. This year marks the first anniversary of her mother-in-law's passing, and Shiori notices her father-in-law looking tired and quietly lonely. Yet, seeing him maintain his dignity and strength as a man despite his grief deeply moves her. Wanting to cheer him up, she decides to make botamochi, his favorite treat. The taste closely resembles the botamochi made by his late wife, Tomiko, and as he eats it, Shiori's image begins to blur with the memory of his departed wife. Overcome with emotion, he breaks down in tears and pulls Shiori into a tight embrace. Unable to contain his feelings any longer, he gives in to desire and sleeps with her. Feeling in his passion the deep love he once held for his late wife, Shiori—despite guilt and conflicted emotions toward her husband—resolves to surrender to this forbidden relationship, if only for the duration of this week-long summer holiday.
